Newcomb Institute at Tulane University is a preeminent academic leader in the Gulf South focused on cutting-edge gender equity research, training the next generation, and igniting change with action.
Research Focus
We conduct multidisciplinary research with a focus on the Gulf South and in partnership with both government and community partners, to provide evidence for programs and policies that improve gender equity and women’s empowerment. This work includes data and evidence generation, creation of open-access datasets, collecting and preserving archival materials for public access, and training undergraduate and graduate and post-doctoral researchers.

Beyond 911: Where People Seek Help
Police reports and 911 calls tell only part of the story of domestic and sexual violence. A new report from Newcomb Institute, developed in partnership with United Way of Southeast Louisiana and VIA LINK, examines calls and texts to 211 and 988 crisis services across ten Southeast Louisiana parishes.
The findings offer a new perspective on where people are seeking help and how communities can use that information to better plan services, outreach and resources.
Violence in America: Findings from the 2025 United States Violence Experiences Survey reveals the scale and reach of violence in American life. Based on a nationally representative survey of more than 2,500 adults across all 50 states, the report finds that roughly half of U.S. adults have experienced physical violence and nearly half have experienced sexual violence in their lifetimes, with particularly high burdens of sexual and intimate partner violence among women and LGBTQ+ people. A partnership between Newcomb Institute at Tulane University and the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy, USVEX goes beyond measuring prevalence to examine who experiences violence, where and by whom it occurs, and how violence intersects with economic hardship, mental health, and well-being. Together, the findings make clear that violence is not an isolated experience, but a widespread public health and social issue with consequences for individuals, families, and communities across the country.
