Feminist Journalism in Action: My Internship at Ms. Magazine
This summer, I had the pleasure of working at Ms. Magazine as an editorial intern. As a feminist and a passionate advocate for social justice, I was incredibly excited to contribute to an organization committed to feminist journalism and social change. My two majors, Political Science and Communication, intersected in this position, and I was able to take lessons from my classes and practice them in a real-world setting. I loved writing about politics and expressing my interests on a platform from which others read and learn.
Because I live in Washington, D.C., I had the exciting opportunity to work in person with the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), the publisher of Ms. I worked with one Ms. intern and several FMF interns, so I got to meet students from across the country with similar passions. Everyone I encountered contributed to a welcoming and friendly environment. Being in D.C., I was able to take part in unique political events that built upon my existing knowledge of structures and processes. I attended a Senate hearing on the harms of abortion bans, a Georgetown Law Supreme Court Review, a rally at the Supreme Court, and a deliberative polling conference of first-time voters.
In addition, I co-wrote a monthly column called The War on Women Report. The report summarizes instances of patriarchal authoritarianism throughout the United States. Through tracking news stories, I became much more knowledgeable about current events and learned to better write efficiently. These monthly columns provided stability in my schedule and a place to test out the skills I learned at Ms.
Throughout my internship with Ms., I refined my journalistic abilities and commitment to feminist journalism. Ms. provided me with a community and an outlet for issues I care about. I constantly practiced editing and writing, and I know I will use these skills both at Tulane and in my future career. Furthermore, I continuously consumed news from a variety of different sources, increasing my overall awareness. This was particularly exciting during a historic political moment, Vice President Harris’ presidential nomination, which Ms. continues to document. I am so grateful for this opportunity and everything I have experienced through it. I look forward to continuing my work as an editorial intern this fall.
