K.S. James

K S James is the Senior Visiting Scholar at Newcomb Institute, Tulane University. He possesses extensive research and teaching experience in the field of Demography with focus on South Asia. He was formerly the Director and Senior Professor of the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, India. He also served as a Professor of Population Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Professor and Head of Population Research Centre at the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, India.

Leila Escoto

Leila Escoto is the Senior Program Coordinator for Student Engagement for Newcomb Institute. They develop, supervise, and facilitate engagement and outreach opportunities for students. Leila received their B.S. in Psychology with an additional major in History and a minor in Sociology from Tulane University. Before starting this role, Leila played an active role in the campus community as a student, serving as a Career Peer Advisor, Community Engagement Advocate, and a member of the Sexual Aggression Peer Hotline and Education program.

Trailblazers of Tulane: Honoring Black Alumnae

In 1966 Deidre Labat became the first Black woman to earn a degree from Newcomb College, Tulane’s former women’s college. Since then, Tulane has graduated many inspiring Black women, and this Black History Month is a great opportunity to take a closer look at some of their success stories.
