The H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute is the heart of the Tulane University uptown campus. I view the interim directorship as an opportunity to give back by helping to sustain this vibrant Newcomb community, which is unique and precious at a time in higher education when the corporate model has become increasingly pervasive.
This year, we have many events, programs and activities planned. I am most excited about our second biannual summit, titled "POWER LINES: Women Transform the Grid," which is scheduled for Feb. 5-7, 2009. We have invited a number of distinguished speakers in the fields of politics, media, micro-finance, fashion, filmmaking and higher education. In addition to talks, roundtables and interviews, the summit will include discussion circles that will bring speakers together with small groups of students. As a special treat, New Orleans Blues Queen Marva Wright will perform. Everyone is invited to join us for what will be an exciting three days. Check back in a few weeks to register.
I also look forward to my involvement with the Newcomb Fellows program, which supports faculty and student research. Among the most life-changing experiences for young scholars is the opportunity to deepen their intellectual engagement through participation in scholarly symposia, laboratory and field research or internships abroad.
I am indebted to Newcomb for supporting my teaching and research over the years, support that has enabled me to work closely with students on research projects and to engage with other faculty members in productive interdisciplinary seminars and symposia. That's just one example of the crucial role the Newcomb College Institute plays on this campus.
Please stop by the Institute at 43 Newcomb Place, Building #26 on the Tulane uptown campus. If you have questions, suggestions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us. Our doors are always open.
All the best,
Molly Travis
