Spicer has classical French training and has spent a number of years in Europe, honing her skills.  In 1990 she and Regina Keever opened Bayona, which has since been featured in a number of publications including Food & Wine and Gourmet.  While remaining at Bayona, Spicer has also launched Spice, Inc. and Wild Flour Breads specialty food markets, as well as the restaurant Herbsaint.
