General Information about Newcomb Scholars

Through this new program, Newcomb Scholars will have the opportunity to:

  • establish research relationships with faculty and benefit from mentoring by faculty
  • benefit from small, uniquely designed seminars to enhance their research skills and potential
  • complete and present an independently researched project examining both the theoretical and practical implications of their field
  • make valuable contacts with influential professionals and researchers
  • receive funding for research or for travel, internships, or independent projects related to research
  • obtain practical experience through public-service internship
  • gain valuable insight from fellow Scholars and researchers in their field
  • understand their roles as both scholars and leaders
  • influence the campus community in new and positive ways
  • recognize their responsibility as civic-minded and engaged members of the community
Newcomb Scholars offers an important opportunity for women students to be a part of a close-knit community of women in a coeducational environment.  Establishing these types of communities is important because according to a report by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, "While women receive the majority of undergraduate degrees, the percentage declines steeply in graduate school."  Whether your plans are to attend graduate or professional school or enter the workforce upon graduation, the experience with Newcomb Scholars will provide you with the knowledge and tools to pursue your passions with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a seminar?
  • A seminar is similar to other classes offered.  Seminars will involve discussion, information gathering and sharing, guest speakers, projects, papers and readings. They will build on one another to prepare Scholars for their final research project. Each Newcomb Scholar cohort will take the seminars together.

How often are seminars scheduled?

  • One seminar for each academic year:
    • Seminar 1: Spring 2010 - This seminar provides information about college culture and your role as a college student today.
    • Seminar 2: Fall 2010 – Introduction to Research and how faculty members from various disciplines come to know something is true; you begin to develop ideas about the direction of your research.
    • Seminar 3: Fall 2011 – Public Service Internship.
    • Seminar 4: Fall 2012 – Research Seminar where you complete your independent research project and present it at a campus conference, which you take part in developing.

Will the seminars count for credit?

  • Depending upon your major, these seminars may or may not be used towards your major/graduation requirements. This program is one that offers you a unique and individualized opportunity. It is a program that enhances your academic career.

What are the general requirements for the program?

  • Successful completion of each seminar with a minimum grade of B for each seminar.
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.25 by the end of the first year and cumulative grade point average of 3.40 after the second year and until graduation.
  • Must make a commitment to the program as one of your main priorities.

How will I fit the seminar into my class schedule?

  •  We will try to offer seminars during a time that is least likely to conflict with other classes.

What if I have not declared a major?

  •  Students are not required to declare a major before applying for Newcomb Scholars. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of academic majors with the seminars and through developing relationships with faculty members.

Do I need past experience in research?

  • No

Can I spend a semester abroad and still participate in the program?

  • Yes, the seminars are offered in the fall semester (sophomore to senior year), which allows students to spend the spring semester abroad.
